ENZYME

ENZYME entry: EC 1.7.2.6

Accepted Name
hydroxylamine dehydrogenase
Alternative Name(s)
hydroxylamine oxidase
hydroxylamine oxidoreductase
Reaction catalysed
4 Fe(III)-[cytochrome c] + H2O + hydroxylamine <=> 4 Fe(II)-[cytochrome c] + 5 H(+) + nitrite
Comment(s)
  • The enzymes from the nitrifying bacterium Nitrosomonas europaea and the methylotrophic bacterium Methylococcus capsulatus are hemoproteins with seven c-type hemes and one specialized P460-type heme per subunit.
  • The enzyme converts hydroxylamine to nitrite via an enzyme-bound nitroxyl intermediate.
  • While nitrite is the main product, the enzyme from Nitrosomonas europaea can also produce nitric oxide by catalyzing the activity of EC 1.7.2.9.
  • Formerly EC 1.7.3.4.
